RAILWAY SERVICE. WELLINGTON, Jan. 26
The Minister of Railways opened an important rlaihvay conference to-day to consider the re-grading of positions on the Department on tho Regrading Committee’s report. Representatives of the Railways Board, leading officers, and District Traffic Managers are also present. AN INQUIRY. WELLINGTON, Jan. 2G. The Hon A. D. McLeod. Minister of Industries and Commerce, to-day stated that a Tribunal has been set up under Section 13 of the Board of Trade Act. to enquire into the proposed operations of the Proprietary Articles Trade Association. A full opportunity for all evidence for and against the Association would he given. ' ] The following have been..'appointed to take evidence:—Messrs W. B. Montgomery (ex-Uomptroller of Customs), W. B. Hayward (manufacturer, of Dunedin), M. J. Reardon (formerly Workers’ Representative on tlio Arbitration Court), and J. W. Collins (Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce). Comprehensive powers of investigation are being conferred on the tribunal which will commence its sittings probably on the 14th of February at Wellington, and wilT late go to other places. SPINE FRACTURED. CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 26. Although he suffered from a tincture of tlio spine, through being gored by a bull at tho Metropolitan Show, in November last, Mr William Templeton, 1 an elderly man, to-day can walk about, and is on the high rend to recovery. Dr Fox, Superintendent of the Christchurch Hospital 1 !, where Mr Templeton was treated, states that, although his recovery may seem remarkable "to the general public, the 'Gets of tho case were that tlio fracture was not had, and so tho nerves were not greatly damaged. HDd they been so, the tale would have lieen different.
THE RACING TANGLE
CHRISTCHURCH, January 26
It, was expected that a step towards finality in the solution of the question as to'whether the Canterbury Jockey Club or the New Brighton Trotting Club shall hold a special race meeting for the Royal Visit would have been reached at a meeting ol the Royal Reception Committee to-day, hut the Committee had other business, and the question is still unsolved. A trotting meeting will certainly he held, but it will be on the Metropolitan course. The position regarding the J-C. meeting is uncertain. The President of that Club, Mr Gould, blames the Minister for the position as it is at present, declaring that the Minislei lias allowed a suburban trotting club to come into the city and to defeat the Canterbury Jockey Club.
A representative of the Metropolitan Club said it is still uncertain whether the C.J.C. will he given a license for a meeting, although the tralister ol the. Chili’s usual summer meeting from Hie Fchruai y to a March date would m the ordinarv circumstances ho permissable. SERIES OF THEFT CHARGES. DUNEDIN , January 26.
At the city Police Court this morning, William Alfred Robert Fussell was charged with (1) the theft of a postal packet containing a cheque for £3O, the property of the PostmasterGeneral ; (2) breaking and entering the Plunkct Society’s rooms in Stuart St., and stealing a pair of scissors valued at 8s: (3) stealing a cheque for £3O. the property of Butterworth Bros. The accused pleaded guilty to the first charge, and was committed to Hie Supreme Court for sentence. On the charge of breaking and entering, lie pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial. The third charge was withdrawn.
