AI’I’R ENTICES’ RETURNS. WELLINGTON, Jan. 25. In order to relieve the employers and tlie officers i.f the Department of Labour of unnecessary work in compiling the statistics of journeymen in cases where it is clear that the district quota is nearly full, an amendment to the Apprentices’ Act, 1923 has been tiled by the Arbitration Court- to take effect from January 25th. 'Hie amendment is to the effect that no employer shall lie requested to furnish a return of the number of journeymen employed by him unless the district, registrar fO.B. Court) requires him. in writing, so to do. It shall he the duly of the District Registrar to require employers to furnish returns, il and when, it appears to him that the number of apprentices in the district exceeds 90 per cent, of the quota permitted.
This amendment also enables returns if required, to he called for at a date more convenient than March 31st. It is thought November 30th. which approximates to the close of the school year, when numbers of lads are seeking apprenticeship, wilt he a more suitable dale at which to call for ret urns.

The union butchers at Fei tiling freezing works* to-day tried a bluff which did pot .succeed. This moqning 28 of them held a meeting. Eater they informed the Chairman of Directors, Mr J. F. Cubbc. that unless the ’twelve volunteer butchers still employed at tlie works were dismissed at. once they would cease work. Mr Cubbc at once informed the butchers that those volunteers who had come to the help of the company and the farmers would not he dismissed. The company immediately called for more volunteers. It posted a notice telling the strikers to collect their wages. This afternoon, however, a deputation from the butchers again waited on Mr Cohbo, and stated that the men would earrv on as usual.
LITTLE GIRL MISSING. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 25
Trniit Timms, aged 8 years, who disappeared from her home in Xew Brighton on .Saturday, has not yet been found. The' child was subject to epileptic fits, having sometimes as many as nine in one day.
The child was regularly kept under supervision to prevent her from wandering away, and it was while the watch was relaxed for a brief period that she disappeared. It is thought that the girl has wandered off arid lost herself aiul has probably had a fit. LOf'KKTT CASE. DUNEDIN. .Tan. 23. Constable George Macartney appeared again this morning in. the Police Court- charged on two informations, with committing perjury in the Supreme Court on November 3rd. by stating that John William Lockett was drunk on the night, of July 23rd and that lie had struck Lockett no blow.
After lengthy evidence for the prosecution. a groat deal of which, according to the Magistrate, was unreliable decision was reserved till Monday.
