HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 21st

The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present:—.Messrs G. A. Perry (.Mayor), W. Jeffries, G. Heinz, J. King, F. Orr, 11. M. Coulson, 11. T. Parry anil A. R. Kleoek. The minutes were confirmed and nutwan! iin ri spiuidenec approved. .MOTION OF SYMPATHY. The Mayor referred to the recent death of a member of the Council, Mr G. 11. III.:i 1 . and moved that the Council i ii on record its deep sense of loss . ..led. and Convey to Mrs Blank a.l :. inily their deepest sympathy in l.ir heronvement. Speaking to the motion Mr Perry paid a high tribute to the valuable services rendered to the ratepayers and Council bv Mr Blank, specially mentioning his work as Chairman of Public Works. Mr Coulson seconded the motion, endorsing the remarks of he Mayor and also eulogising the excellent public st rvices rendered and his deep regret at Lis demise. Mr lleiiy: also supported and the motion was carried in silence, members standing.

-Mr Coulson also took the opportunity to express the pleasure of the Council at Mr Amlrewes having been able to resume Ids duties though regretting he bail not yet fully recovered. The Mayor endorsed and the motion was agreed to. INWARD COR R ESI’ONDENCE. From Hospital Board notifying vacancy on Board as a result of the death of Mr G. 11. Blank and asking lor (he appointment of a successor: stating at the next election in .May the Council will he entitled to three representatives instead of two as at present.— Received. In view of the early election it was decided not to make an appointment.

From J. Lloyd applying for two months’ leave of absence.—Received and request granted. From Department of Labour in reference to weekly half holiday.—Received. From J. Walsh (sexton) applying for annual leave. Received and request granted subject to a suitable .substitute being arranged for. From Westland County Council notifying license money received under Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act for period was 2731) lls.— Received. From Grey County Council reporting fees received were 2273 IBs.—Received. From Department of Health asking that the necessary steps he taken to exterminate rats in view of the possibility of an outbreak of disease. —Received. From N.Z. Refrigerating Company, Christchurch, notifying during November 72 lambs, 2 sheep and I cattle and in December I vealer and 7 lambs were forwarded to Hokitika.—Received.

From G. Appleton asking lor water connection to his residence. Livingstone Street.—Received ; referred to Overseer to arrange.

From Reofton Picnic Committee applying for use of Cass Square on I*el>. 2nd.— Received and request granted. From E. W. Heoiian, for Peerless Pictures, applying for a reduction ot rental for Town Hail, owing to the small available seating accommodation. —Received. After discussion it was resolved to reduce the charge to 21 pci night, including the supply ot lighting. From Win. Wilson, asking for approval of Savings Rank property boundary, val of Savings Raul; property boundary alterations.—Received and approved. REPORTS. Accounts amounting to CBOI Us 2il were passed tor payment. The Treasurer reported receipts 2280 10s 2d, payments .£l(>7 7s lid. bank credit ha lance 12537 t!s (id. loan account credit 213! 9s Kkl.— Received. From Manager of Abattoirs (J. Jarmail) i‘jport/no- for Dcc-emUor there vcerc* examined: —5 cows. 25 heifers. *>7 billlocks. 212 sheep. 262 lambs, 15 pigs. II caßes. Fees for period .278 Ids , same period last year 281 lis.— Received. FOREMAN'S REPORT. I beg to renort ..the following work was carried out during the month. The following footpaths were chipped and cleaned up for the C hristmas Revel I St, Tailored. Fitzhcrhort. Realev, Hrittan. part of Weld and Hampden Sts. Camp St and Gibson Quay were also cleaned. The rushes and blackberries were cut in Hampden, Weld and Sale Sts-. The spoil from the footpaths was used, in filling up Healey Street drain. Tar sealing was carried out on the following footpaths—Weld. Hamilton. Sewell and Hampden. Sts. We were out three times along the pipe line during the month repairing, and several leaks were repaired in vai ions parts ol tl:e town, a water connection in Tailored St and the uatei connection at the Sexton s residence was repaired, and a lire plug in Bcalev St.

A six-inch drain was put in at the corner of Hampden and Fitzherbert Sts at Air F. Andrews’.

A crossing was put in at Airs O’Brien’s property in Stafford St. Cass Square and Alaeandrew Square were attended to. the grass plots mowed, and the flower plots weeded.

Eight 2ft Jin pipes and 4 channels were made during the month. The fine weather experienced at the end of the month resulted nt the watei varying from lit fiiu to 7tt. Received.

In reference to the water supply It was stated that" there were a number I of pipes that required attention. Mi- On* complimented the Overseer on his excellent work in connection with the water supply. He was doing excellent work and he moved the Council express appreciation. Seconded by Air Heinz who said AL Chesterman was putting in a lot of solid work and was proving a very able officer. The motion was agreed to. It was resolved that the annual dog tax for the year he 10s per dog.

Ah- Coulson presented the report of the sub-committee on the proposed motor bye-laws and moved that it lay j on the table. Seconded by the ALayor and carried. A suggestion that it I>e referred to to the Automobile Association for consideration was approved. Afr Perry said Air Coulson had referred to his approaching departure for England and America and he took the opportunity of extending good wishes for an interesting and happy journey. Air Coulson had served for twenty years on the Council and had served the ratepayers very faithfully. He hoped he would have a very pleasant holiday.

Mr Jeffries joined in the expression of good wishes for the trip to England and America. He understood it was for the purpose of further education in his profession that Air Coulson was tuiing. recognising that it was always necessary to keep in touch with the advancement of any profession. He recognised Air Coulson as a sterling] member who had given a lot uf his time to the service of the Borough and the ratepayers owe him a debt of gratitude. He congratulated him on his long service and wished him a pleasant trip. Afr Coulson thanked the speakers for their kind words, and would ask for three months leave of absence as that would enable him to have had 20 tears of service on the Council. He wished

to publicly express his appreciation of the support always given him by the electors. He also wished to thank the Town Clerk and Councillors for the

assistance and support always given. He did not intend to seek re-election, and it was with deep regret that he would sever his connection with the Council.

The Mayor moved that three months leave of absence ho granted Mr Coulsoit. Seconded by Air Jeffries and carried.

The question of continuing the tar sealing of the roads was raised by Air Heinz, who favoured attention being paid to the- footpaths first and lie issued a warning as to the limit of tar that was available. The Chairman of Public Work’s (Mr Orr) was directed to look into the subject and take what action he thought best in the matter. The Council rose at 8.17 p.m.
