SWIMMING CARNIVAL
A WONDERFUL SUCCESS. The Hokitika Swimming Club’s swimming carnivai at the baths last night attracted an attendance of well over nine hundred persons the accommodation being taxed to its utmost. The various events were run off very smartly, and there were splendid contests the finishes being very close. It was a- very pleasing sight to see the young people, disporting themselves in tlm writer which was warmer than the atmosphere, which was somewhat chilly. The officials Messrs A. H. I.awn. T. Gillocfy. At. FI. Houston. AA’. Stavelev. R. Lynn and AA'. Keesing were very t-neeessful in running the programme off smartly. Mr Keesing also delighted the audience with a fine exhibition of fancy diving and swimming. The receipts were very satisfactory, a record for tlie baths at: the nominal figure charge of Is and (Jd. and amounted to over £3O. A number of competitors came from Ross and their presence added considerably to the competition, and they were fairlv successful in the several events. One of the stands give wav during the evening hut did no damage and this morning it was removed and a new structure is being erected in time for the next carnival which wiV he held very shortly. Dir Keesing has kindly offered, his services to teach swimming, during his leisure hours, especially the younger children, and the offer will doubtless he fully taken advantage of.
