LICENSING ACT. Charges of being unlawfully oil licensed premises were dealt with as follows : All offender (Occidental Hotel) ordered to pay costs 7s. Two offenders (Club Hotel). One was lined 20s and costs 7s and the other Ills and 7s costs Two offenders (Dunedin Hotel). One was ordered to pay costs 7s and the other was fined 20s and costs 7s. Three offenders (Helvetia Hotel. Goldsborough). Each ordered to pay costs, two of 7s and one of 18s. William M. Routhau, licensee of 11 ilvetia, Hotel. Goldsborough. pleaded guilty to opening for sale of liquor and selling liquor on ’Xmas Day. Fined 20s and costs 7s on one charge, the other being withdrawn. A. C. Ellis charged with procuring liquor while prohibited was fined 5s and
costs 7s. F. Low. similarly charged was fined os and costs 7s, P. Souter, similarly charged, was fined 5s and costs 7s. A DEFENDED CHARGE. The Police charged a number < f residents with being unlawfully on licensed premises Three Mile Tfbtel. and the licensee Edwin Sherrill’ was charged with exposing liquor for salami selling during prohibited home. Mr Murdoch, for defendants, pleaded not guilty.
Evidence was given by Sergl. Kin that at 10 a.in. on ’Xmas morning :Y’ visited Three Mile Hotel. K. Sherrill, licensee. The front door was lock' d, gained entrance by hack door, and in a room adjacent to the bar found a number of persons. The liar door was open, the licensee’s wife was standing in the door. u"d the whole ol ihc ha.'' were exposed to tile view ol those present. Thomas Roclil'ord stated 'ic was a hoarder and that lie had invited them all to have a drink. Ilis Worship .-aid the hoarder vs: - entitled to shout, and the licensee wis entitled to supply the hoarder and his friends. The charge against the lit fusee would lie dismissed. Evidence was l lien given hv sever. I of those charged with being unlawfully on the premises. Convictions for being on the premises illegally were made against live persons. three to pay 9s each < osts and two 7s each, one other charge being adjourned. THEFT CHARGE. The no!ice charged Claud Robertson with theft of a Stetson hat valued at €1 its fid, the properly of Ronald Ross. Ronald Ross gave evidence that he was a painter. On Saturday Bth. January went to Railway Hotel for lunch. Was wearing a Stetson velour hat. which he hung in the passage by the dining room door. 'Her lunch came out. and found Ihe hat was mi-sing From enquiries made went, to the Post Office Hotel and sau defendant look-
ing at a card game. Defendant stooped down and witness saw the hat in his inside emit pocket. Defendant denied having been in the Railway Hotel and made no explanation as to how th hat came, there. The hat produced was his" hat. He. valued it at C 4 9s fid.
George N. Gifford deposed lie was a barman at the Railway Hotel. On Bth. January defendant came to the hotel about It n.m. and remained there until witness went to lunch at I p.m. When witness came hack from lunch defendant had gone, Tie bad been playing cards. Tie knew the lint and bad seen Boss wearing it. Claud Robertson gave evidence that be went to the hotel for a meeting and was there at 10.15. lie had bought a bat in the morning. He went down the back, and coming back lning his bat on a peg. When be wont away he took the hat from the peg and pul the hat- in his pocket. He was in the Post Office Hotel when Boss came in. He took the hat out of witness’ pocket and then told him to stay there and shortly after he came back with a. constable.
To Scrgt. King—Bought the hat at tlie Clothing Factory. Tt was not wrapped up. and lie carried it loose. Convicted and fined £5 and costs £1 in default I I days in Grcvmotith gaol.
