With reference to the Press Association message appearing in yesterday morning's paper, announcing a reduction in the price of fertilisers in Auckland, inquiries made in Wellington indicate that the reduced prices mentioned (viz., 11-1(1 per cent, super. Cl 17s fid ; basic super C-l Ids, and Nauru phosphate Cl 10s, all net cash on trucks) will apply to the whole of the North Island, and that railage will be charged to the farmer as from the nearest works at Auckland. Wanganui, or New Plymouth. These reductions have been made by all the fertiliser manufacturers of the North Island. As the result of a recent merger by the New Zealand Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., with__ Wright, Stephenson and Co., lor the acquisition of the latter company's Otahulm works, it is understood that tno suppliers of the New Zealand Dairy Coy. The following protest against the closing down of the State sawmills at Mainnku has been sent to the Minister by the Auckland Labour Members or Parliament —" In view of the serious unemployment problem already existing, and of the fact that the State sawmill must have a steady effect on timber prices, as well as doing its share towards supplying the market, whic-h is taking some of its supplies front American sources, we desire to record our protest aginst the handing over of the New Zealand market to timber companies overseas, while our own men are seeking employment. A conservative estimate of the unemployed in Auckland at present is about 1000 and we trust that the Government will move in this matter immediately.”
