fortunes of Llio County to their present state. Praise was given also to

the sitting members for the attention devoted to the interests of the district. The County Council is our most important body and as such lias responsibilities which carry a good deal of care. The district lias been well cared for. It is only necessary to reflect back a couple of decades to realise the progress which, has been made. Means of communication have* been improved very greatly, but despite what lias been done, there is still so much more to lie done. The Council to-day as the Council to come after has plenty of work before it. and for that reason the ratepayers generally should see that the district- is well represented. Under the system of representation, each riding lias a membership ill keeping with its poulation and financial value. It is always good to sec emulation for public offices, thereby showing a keen citizen spirit. In that connection as was remarked at the reunion, llio AYcstlaud County Council lias had many notable men in its fold, men who have made their mark in the public life not only of tTie community —but also of the country at large. There is no reason why the local body should not continue to he n training ground for such wider service, for the system of local Government is most hipful in the experience it affords for wider public life. The Council honoured its Chairman with a presentation which was in every way fitting. As evidence of the excellence of the training ground, the Council has had a worthy line of Chairmen who have ruled wisely and well, and the present Chairman ranks in the lest company in that, respect. Entering on the new ora with a renewed lease of life every good wish will he out for the future prosperity of the Council and (lie County.
