The “Daily Mail's” Shanghai correspondent says: The authorities here are now placing barbed wire in position in the foreign settlement against a possible attack by the Cantonese. Steel crates are being created in the French Concession, blocking each street. 11ANKOW NEGOTIATIONS. LONDON. Jan. 17. The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent says that numerous telegrams have been received from Mr O'Malley, the British representative who went to Hankow. The telegrams have not disclosed any definite progress in the conversations between Mr O’Malley and Eugene Chen (representing the Canton Government). BRITISH CUSTOMS OFFICIALS. LONDON, Jan. 10. The news from the Foreign Concession on the Shanecn River “Island,” opposite to Canton City, is disquieting. Some of the highest British officio's in the Chinese Maritime Customs have communicated with London, expressing their concern as to the future of their administration unless the .1 reatv Powers adopt a firm attitude. The Customs officials recall the rapid decline in the authority and prestige of the Powers in recent months.
