PROHIBITION FIGURES. F . WASHINGTON, Tan. 16. y Prohibition enters Its eighth year tof day. Wets and Rrys agree it has cost more in money, prison sentences and lives than the enforcement of any other Federal legislation. Fifty-one prohibition agents have been slain during the period. It is estimated over 250 violators were killed, although accurate figures concerning; the latter are unavailable. 10.505 persons have been gaoled, the number increasing each 'year until 4884 were convicted in 1926. Seven years’ fines and penalties collected total 33,229,098d01. while 612.681,000d01. have been expended on V enforcement. Additional cost in 1927 r is estimated at 11,993,000d01.
U.S. NAVAL PROPOSALS. WASHINGTON, Jan. 16. The House Naval Affairs’ Committee in a report declared the elevation of guns on thirteen battleships would not conflict with the spirit of Washington Arms Treaty, hut added that the President must determine whether the work should he undertaken. The Committee’s report indicates that foreign buildup" programmes have not observed the Treaty. The proposed elevations V would give a. range approximately of y 24,000 yards on the older vessels and At.OOO yards on the Oklahoma and Nevada.
