TEATTIC ACCIDENTS. TE AWAMUTU. Jan. 8
Jean Cordon, aged four, had a miraculous escape this afternoon. She ran to cross the road from behind a standing car, but ran in front of a motor lorry, which knocked her down. Fortunately. the child fell clear of the wheels, \niul though the vehicle passed over her, she suffered only paintul abrasions. THREE CHILDREN HURT. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 9. Meagre details aro to band concerning a distressing accident this afternoon through a car going over a banknear Wyndham. Three children were more or less seriously injured . They were being driven in to see their father (William Aitken) who is in the Southland Hospital, when the accident occurred .Tho boy in the party received a broken arm, one girl a broken collar bone, and tho other girl is suffering from concussion. All were admitted to the hospital. ACCIDENT AT FIRE. ' DUNEDIN, Jan. 9. John Cartright, a member of the City Fire Brigade, a single man, aged 22. was admitted to the hospital to-day suffering from injuries to tho head mid shoulders received through a portion of the brickwork of a chimney collapsing and striking him while lit- was attending a fire in Mornington. Tho building was a five-roomed wooden one, owned and occupied by Mr Valentine. It was almost completely destroyed. No details of tho insurances are available.
LAUNCH CAPSIZES. AUCKLAND. .Tan. 0. Two cousins, Thornton Tidd and Harold Tidd, left Devonport .in a 14-foot sailing; Boat about O'o’clock on Saturday evening. About 8 o’clock tbe boat, was capsized off Alotuilii Island. Thornton Tidd reached the island safolv but nothing more has been seen ot Harold Tidd. A search for the missing man was made to-day by friends in launches, but as no trace of the boat, was found the party returned to Auckland this afternoon. Tt is probable that the boat has been carried out to sea or washed up along the coast.

' \ representative meeting of farmers here passed a. resolution that the present method of grading produce at the ports is most unsatisfactory, as l ie farmers have no say in the matter, and the meeting suggests to the Munstei tlmt the graders should ho appointed bv the Departmcn of Agriculture, and made solely responsible to that Department. ______ MEDICAL CONGRESS. WELLINGTON, January 7. The Australasian Medical Congress, which is to he held in New Zealand this year, opens at Dunedin on February 3rd and will continue for about a week A large number of medical men from all part's of the Dominion have intimated their intention to attend. The Government will he represented by the Minister for Hcnflh, the Hon. Mr Young and the Department of Health, by the Director-General of Health, Dr. Valentine, and several of the other sen-
ior officers. Great preparations are being made in Dunedin for the entertainment of the guests. Dr. L. E. Barnett, C.M.G., Dunedin, will he the president of the congress. - ———...
