FIFTY QUAKES IX CALIFORNIA. NEW YORK, Jan. 1. Telegrams from Calexico, in California, reports that violent earthquakes fftook the entire Imperial Valley hi California, Northern Mexico, and Arizona shortly after midnight, while the • residents were celebrating the advent of the New Year. TKe damage to the biggest building Jfi.s estimated at over a million dollars. rj More than fifty tremors were recorded altogether over a period of five hours. The populace of Calexico were ter-ror-sticken and are camping in tho open air fearing a recurrence. The water mains were broken and the streets of the town were flooded. A brewery was burned in Mexicali, across tho Mexico border, the loss being estimated at two hundred thousand dollars. The Governor’s Palace was split open and other buildings wore almost razed. Tho police are now patrolling roped off zones. tremors extended from San DieCalifornia to Quinn, Arizona. Mexicali, according to other messages, seems to have borne the brunt of tho visitation, a fire following tho sli allies.
