In the Commons, Sir Joynson Hicks, justifying the month’s continuance of toe emergency regulations mentioned that there were more offences during the last month than previously, mostly in counties where men were resuming to work. Labour members challenged tlie Homo Secretary to say how many miners had resumed. Sir .Tovnson Hicks: One hundred thousand with sixty thousand .safety men. Ml- MacDonald contended the regulations by loosening the l.ewiggcd formality of the law encouraged the police to launch trivial prosecutions. The debate proceeded on party lines and lifelessly, beyond Labour challenges of individual clauses. The debate included Baty’s amendment on Regulation 14, making it obligatory for the Government to take over the mines, George Thorn stating the step was necessary in order to bnr<r the mine owners to heel. The antendmnt was rejected by 201 to 99. The House then carried the continuance of emergency regulations 196 and 99.
