While the south was revelling in a heat wave the North of England was 'visited by tropical floods, railway and road traffic in many places being interrupted. POISONED GOLD FISH. LONDON, Sept. 21. Scotland Yard has been called upon to solve the mystery iff the poisoning of 100,000 gold fish in tanks* belonging to a London merchant, IT. Gay. They included consignments from Holy, China, and Japan and the total loss is £2OOO. Gay states that two foreigners called to inspect the fish, and one managed to get him away from the tanks for a short time. He suspects a foreign rival, as lie is the only Englishmen in the trade. The fish were not insured, since it is impossible to insure gold fish. HOKITIKA BOY’S MARRIAGE. (Received this day at 11.0 a.m.) LONDON, September 21. Mr A. J. lTarrop (son of the late Mr A. N. Hnrrop, of Hokitika), journalist, of Christchurch, was married to Miss Hilda Valentine, daughter of Mr J. AValentine. School Inspector of Hawke’s Bay Mr T. H. B. Drew was best man. Sir James Parr telegraphed congratulations. Air LTarrop’s hook, “England and New Zealand,” has received favourable press notices. Admiral .Telliooo contributed an enthusiastic preface.
