NON-PERM A NEXT VOTES. GENEVA, September 16
Colombia, Poland, Chile, San Salvador, Belgium. Ronmania, Netherlands, China, and Czechoslovakia were elected to non-permanent seats. Ireland polled ten votes out of forty-nine, thus was thirteenth in a field of seventeen. Canada obtained two votes.
LEAGUE SESSION. GENEVA, Sept. IS
To-day was devoted to a plenary session, with a debate upon Council reorganisation. In this debate. Sir George Foster (Canada) condemned tho policy of dividing the representation into watertight geographical compartments which, lie said, would perhaps tetter League. He recalled the fact that nothing this far has been heard of the grouj) made up of Hie British Dominions. He added that Canada was not claiming a Council seat, hut it was pertinent to declare her rights to representation as being equal with those of any of the sfi members of the League. Mr Fitzgerald (Ireland Hollowed. Ho did not mention the Free State’s claim, but he pleaded that the members of tlm Council should not regard themselves ns permanent members, and threaten to withdraw if they weie not elected.
GENEVA, Sept. 16
Spiders have determined to pi ay a part in international affairs, all tho hotels in Geneva being infested. They hang from ceilings, drop on beds and spin webs on the League delegates’ hats. An English woman’s shrieks awoke everyone in one expensive hotel at two o’clock in tho morning because she found a spider in her hair. Tho insects have even found their way into the hall where the League is solemnly sitting. Signor Scialoja (Italian delegate) mentioned the invasion to AI. Afotta (League President), and AI. Vanderveldo (Belgian delegate) pointed to a spider on his cheek. AI. Afotta tinned from weighty foreign problems, and called together the chief hotelkeepers. after which scores of maids declared war on the insects effecting a temporary clearance. AVhen night I came, however, it was found that many of the spiders had taken vefuge in tho beds. TURKEY’S INTENTIONS. GENEVA, Sept. 14, Nothing: so far has happened in connection with Turkey’s application for membership.* The three Turkish Ambassadors liave been busy sounding the delegations to ascertain how Turkev’s overtures would be rece.yed If is‘not probable that Turkey will make any move for a few months. Tho Germans miiko no secret_ _ their anxiety that Turkey should join the League.
