Stock are looking exceptionally well for the lime of the year. Settlers are c non pied putting; in their main potato crops, also spring; oats and miscellaneous crops. The dairying community are preparing lor a further busy season and there appears to he still a notable increase in the number ol cows and of a superior class, the result of importation of dairy stud stock into the district a few years ago.
One settler proposes to breed pigs on a large scale, commencing this season. A number of stud bulls are expected by the Government boat from Southland next week, lauding at Jackson’s Hay.
The Stock Inspector is expected to pay a visit to the district, having joined the Progress League party landing at Jacksons flay next week. This makes the first visit of a Government Insnector for several years. .Miss Boustridge, of Okuru. is .the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Harris, of Huhuka. WHITER A IT. Large and constant quantities of whitebait are entering the Southern rivers, pointing out vividly the vast scope for the canning industry. No less than six important rivers could he onerated from a central factory at Oktnu. Such a scheme would employ many scores of fishermen and would eventually become the most important whitebait canning centre in New Zenl.ind. not only on nenunt of its wide scope for operations on a large scale, but also on account of its close position to Jacksons Ray the nearest commercial port to ..Australian ports. uivT’RU. September !L Air Win. Jeffries (Chairman of the Westland County Council) accompanied by’Afr Millner (Road Overseer) will arrive here to-morrow. The Progress League Party are expected at Jacksons Ray the latter end of next week. Tt is to he hoped onr visitors will he favoured with good weather. Thus favoured a delightful and interesting trip wilt be assured. A number of Okuru residents propose to meet the visitors at the Bay.
