RHODES SCHOLARS

DUNEDIN, Sept. 13

A prominent educationalist and member of the University Senate expressed strong doubts to-day whether many students chosen as Rhodes Scholars in Canada. Australia, and New Zealand measured up to the type Air Rhodes had in view.

He stated that many of the students on their return did not take a prominent part in the community in the domain of civic activities, public and social service that the founder desired. Mr Rhodes hoped to secure young men who would be moving forces in the life of the community. It was doubtful whether the high all-round standard of qualification and personality necessary to accomplish this in public life was secured. Alone emphasis should be placed on literary ability, debating power, and force of character. Better selection would be possible if the recommendations were made earlier to enable the selectors to got more in personal touch with flic candidates. WOOL PROSPECTS. AUCKLAND.
