MR GOODFELLOW’S VIEWS. AUCKLAND, Sept. 7. An Auckland ‘.‘Star” reporter, who interviewed Air AY. Goodfellow, managing director of the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company in connection with the butter slump, was told that the collapse had not lreen altogether unexpected.

‘‘lt is due” said Mr Goodfellow, “to the fact that a number of factories have been in the habit, during the past few years, of placing selling limits on their produce, without possessing the knowledge of market conditions necessary to estimate what constitutes a reasonable limit.”

As to the prospects of the Control Board reviewing the scale of its butter fat payments, Mr Goodfellow pointed out that the month’s payments, due on September 201 h., would not be affected, and it was premature to speculate upon what the position might be a month later. By that time the stored socks, encuraged by low rates, will probably have gone into consumption, and the determining factor for the new •season’s produce will be the exportable output from Australia and New Zealand. In this connection, Mr Goodfellow mentioned that his latest advices wore to the effect that conditions in New .South Wales and Victoria were normal, hut that Queensland was having a dry spell. Present indications were for Inrgely increased exports from Australia and New Zealand, particularly the former. STOLEN BENZINE. WUAKATANE, Sept. 7. Four voting half-castes, Robert, Phillip. and John Collier, and [lira Kawiti. were charged at the Magistrate's Court with stealing benzine at Edgecombe and Rotoma. With the stolen benzine they went to Rotorua and back on a joy-ride. All pleaded guilty. Phillip and John Collier were eaclied fined CIO and costs, and Robert Collier and Kawiti were remanded to appear before the Magistrate next week. Both the latter were fined a fortnight ago for the theft of benzine from a farmer’s cream stand. They were given time to pay the line and in the meantime the present lapse occurred. A FIRE. AUCKLAND, September 8. A file in a block of six brick shops at Milford owned by P. S. Gee. originated in the premises of C. E. Wood (draper) whose stock was practically destroyed. The whole block was insured for L’lsoo, the amount on the part damaged being £250. Wood’s stock and fittings were insured for £llsO.

SHEEP FLOCKS. WELLINGTON. Sept. 7. The number of sheep in the Dominion at April 30th. last was 21.904,993 as compared with 24,547.955 for the previous year. The totals now are South Island, 11,074,743; North Island, 13,830.250. Messrs Izard and Stephens were declared elected. MAN DISAPPEARS. HAMILTON. Septemher 8. A man named Bert Whyman hooked a night’s lodgings at a. hotel in Hamilton on September Ist. He disappeared the following morning leaving a number of his belongings behind. He lias not been heard of. since. TTis age is 37 years. He is of slim build and a pale complexion. The police are investigating. GIPSY SMITH. AUCKLAND. Septemher 8. A persistent interjeetov at Gipsy Smith’s meeting in the T own Hall tonight refused to leave the gathering. Several ushers attempted to put him out and a struggle followed. AFTER FIVE -YEARS. NEW PLYMOUTH, September S. After a lapse of five years, since the alleged commission of the oifencc and the issue of a warrant, an old man, names James Ross, appeared at the Court to-day on a charge of breaking, entering and stealing iron and tools from a blacksmith’s shop at Awaldno, of a value of £9 10s. The accused could not he located by the polite until arrested at Kawliia last month. Accused reserved defence and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.

BIGAMY CHARGE. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 8. Charges of bigamy and talse pretences were laid against Samuel Julian, garage proprietor, of Opunnke, it being alleged that Julian went through a form of marriage with Ivy Gladys Igguklen at Opunakc, while having previously married Violet Minnie Real in Cornwall, England, and that lie represented himself to the Registrar as a bachelor. The accused pleaded “ not guilty,” and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. DOCTOR. CHARGED. WELLINGTON, September 8. On the application of Mr Cornish, defendant’s counsel, at the hearing of the charge against Oscar Jacobsen, a well-known Wellington medical practitioner, of allegedly using an instrument on a young woman, he was remanded on hail of £250 and one surety of £250. September 8. , Lily Hodge, known as Mrs Wilson, a married woman, aged 32, was to-day committed to the next sittings of the Supreme Court Tor trial on charges of aiding Elizabeth Ann M ylie, alias Ncvill, in the using of an illegal instrument upon Ella I "Sylvia Rush and Noruli Coekram. The two young women concerned deposed to staying at the accused’s house in Wellington, during a period in which they alleged that illegal instruments were used upon them by Mrs Ncvill.
