AMERICAN CABLE NEWS

[Australian N.Z. Cable Association.]

STORM DAMAGE. (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 5. A Chicago message says Illinois. Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Indiana began taking stock to-day of the heavy losses through floods, wind and storms .which have been sweeping these staes during the past four days, rculting in four deaths and many million dollars damage to property, streets and houses. In many towns power and light plants and railway yards have been destroyed over areas of many square miles. The crop damage, however, has been the heaviest. Agricultural agents who surveyed the destruction in four principal maize-growing States doubt whether the saturated fields will dry out in time for the late crops to mature, before the frost arrives. Losses on grain in the fields lias been enormous. Young stock, particularly pigs and poultry, in many districts have been killed. The Mississippi River in many places lias risen two feet in twenty-four hours. Several cities are without light and others without' drinking water, the pumping stations having failed. Meteorological reports indicate further rains and wind disturbances. IMPER TAT, CONFERENCE. OTTAWA, September 4.

The Alontreal “Star” to-day attributed to tho Acting-Premier (Mr Drayton) a denial of the London rumours that Canada had asked for a further postponement of tbe Imperial Conference and states he said: “If we did suggest instead of being at the beginning of October that the conference should be put back two weeks, this was agreed to, but that is all.”
