ALTERATIONS TO TARIFF

Resolutions were passed in the Hmue of Representatives last night making the following tariff amendments, applicable to goods imported or cleared ex warehouse, after 31st. Aug. 1920: Motor vehicles, fixed body duties abolished. Basis ml. valorem. Rates for motor vehicles now are: British preferential, 10 per cent., general tariff 35 per cent. When vehicles imported have pas-senger-carrying bodies, an additional body duty is'payable as follows: British preferential tariff 10 per cent, up to £2OO, dutiable value 5 per cent.; on any remaining general tariff 15 per cent, up to £2OO dutiable value and "i per cent, on any remainder. Expression “dutiable value” means current domestic value, plus 10 per cent. Body duty is calculated on value of complete vehicle. Special provision is made for body duty when bodies are imported separately ; also when vehicles imported without portion of usual equipment. General tariff rate increased from 25 per cent, to 3-5 per cent, on following tariff items: 257—Rubber tyres, rubber tyring, inner tubes of rubber for pneumatic tyres. N.E.T. 417 Gas engines, oil engines entered and declared for use on cycles, motor vehicles, traction engines and tractors suited for nse in warehouses or upon wharves and pavements. 54!)—Bicycles, tricycles and like vehicles including motor cycles etc. 5C3 Speedometers and mileage recorders suited for use on road vehicles. Rough sawn timber of the following kinds with certain specified exceptions now dutiable two shillings per hundred superficial feet—Beechwood, cedar, oak. mahogany and walnut.
