WESTLAND COMPETITIONS

Ihe Competitions under the AVestland Competitions Society opened at the 'Town Hall punctually at 10 o’clock this. morning, in the presence of a fair attendance, which increased substantially as the morning advanced—all seats being occupied. That fact augurs well for the general success of the gathering, and the result must, be very satisfactory to the Committee. Extra seating was provided for tho afternoon and evening sessions. The judges are:—Elocution. Air R. T. Bush of Greymouth; and music, Afr E. AToss of Greymouth. Afiss Aileen Daly, A.T.C.L., is the official accompanist. The prize winners of the completed items this forenoon wore:— Girls’ Song, “The Lilac Tree,” Aliss C. Lynn 1 ; Afiss E. Howat 2. Piano Solo, “Anita,” Aliss R. Guthberlot 1 ; Aliss P. Toohey 2. Violin Solo, “ Barcarolle,”—Master D. Heinz 1, Aliss E. Randall 2. RECALLS FOR TO-NIGHT. Recitation. “ Off To Poppv Land.” B. Staines, T. TCeown, T. AVard. J. Gilloolv, A. Stencils, \ Recitation.—"Hullo.”—A’. Nightingale, F. Nortbcroft, AT. Coulson. C. I.vnn. | RECALLS FOR. TO-AfORROAY. Recitation.—“lt Couldn’t Be Done.’’ —J. AVard, E. Clarke, E. Fowler. All’ Bush (judge of elocution) speaking this morning, said lie was delighted to see the Competitions revived in Hokitika, and was glad to see the result of the revival was so encouraging. Th® work that morning had been varied, but some very good performances were put up. Afr AToss endorsed the remarks of Afr Bush, and said t.lie musical work was very encouraging and the Compel itions should be a. great success. The Competitions were continued throughout the afternoon and will bo resumed to-night at 7.30 o'clock at the. Town Hall, where owing to the limited accommodation, early attendance will be necessary to secure .a sent.

There is an attractive programme for this evening. Tn addition to the recalls several popular solo and other items will be given. A special number will be rendered by Miss K. Wallace, violinist, of Greymouth. which should be a. very pleasing solo.

The Competitions will be continued ,ill day to-morrow, in both the Town Hall and Princess Theatre. There will be a monster demonstration concert in the Theatre to-morrow night. The price for admission at the evening session is front seats 2s. back seats Is.
