The Government is asked to grant freedom of conscience, of thought, ol religious teaching, of association, and of the press, and also to grant the Church recognition and the necessary personality to make these liberties effective. The petition expresses the conviction that this is the only way to end the religious conflict. President Calles has not replied, but the Government officials believe that if he does, lie will reiterate his. absolute enforcement of the laws.
