AMERICAN CARLE MEWS

“Australia & N.Z. Cable Association.] N.Z. INVESTIGATOR’S VIEWS. NEW YORK, Aug. 16. Mr Ford, General Manager of the Auckland Tramways, has arrived here, following on his investigation .of the rapid transit facilities in twenty American cities. He said he found the authorities had long ago recognised the necessity for the coordination of tramway and motor rapid transit facilities, since cut-throat competition, which apparently offered some immediate gain to the public, ultimately resulted in loss to the community. He added that American conditions had convinced him that buses would not for, a long time yet supercede the tramways as concerns the great hulk of the transportation facilities. The chief benefit of buses here accrues from their offering transit facilities to sharply populated suburban areas. He will leave for England on September Bth. to continue his investigation.
