A good deal of amusement was caused at the Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch on Monday morning when a woman and her husband were waiting for the calling of the case of separation and maintenance in which they were' to he the principals. The wife was passing away the time by basking in the sunshine in the courtyard. The husband passed by, and some remark he made led to his being chased by his better half. He took refuge in one of the corridors, but was driven from there into the prisoners’ room. His wife here attacked him with vigour, but the police interfered and saved him from a knock-out. A little later on the husband ventured outside on to the Armagh Street Bridge and was gazing into the crystal waters of the Avon when his wife launched a second attack. This time she had invoked the aid of four female friends. They succeeded in downing the husband in the gutter, but he eventually made good liis escape.

. At Greymouth Magistrate’s Court yesterday Anthony Henry Cawley, a. waterside worker, was charged with assaulting Matthew Thomas, boatswain of the steamer Knponga. Working at night with the aid of an automobile, thieves during the past week have been raiding cars parked m Christchurch, says the “Lyttelton Times,’’ and a large number of motorists have reported to 'the police the loss of rugs, suit cases and other belongings. Grand National neck is of toil selected by crooks for such exploits, and it is believed that the nocturnal raiders, having, according to reports, made a very successful “clean-up,” will now seek other fields. Detectives were busy all last week investigating the reported thefts, hut the thieves, whose methods stamped them as old hands, were fast workers and were careful to leave nothing of a tell-tale nature behind them to help the officers in their work. Most of the thefts concerned suitcases, travelling rugs, overcoats and other belongings that.had been left in cars while the owners were temporarily absent. However, the raiders are said to have betrayed a very ample taste, and anything movable in the cars favoured with their attention quiokly found a new resting place
