COAL TROUBLE.

[Australian & N.Z. Cablo Association.] LONDON, August 12. Tho coal outlook is decidedly more hopeful. An agreement has been concluded lietween the owners and South Wales workers for the engagement of stokers and craftsman. The agreement specificably provides for an eight hour day for the underground workers; and also for a forty-eight hours week, inclusive of meal times, for the surfacemen. Mr Varley, M.P., addressing the Nottingham miners, said: “If there is no hope of anything happening nationally, let us see what the Nottingham and Derby owners have to offer. If it is anything good, let us tell tho Miners’ Federation to make it tho basis of a national demand. Let the men return where the owners are prepared to pay the original demand.” This statement was applauded.
