Two separate explosions occurred at the works in the course of construction for tire Water Board, both at the same time, one at the pumping station and the other at the wheat silos at AA’hito Bay. At the former, after a number of charges of gelignite had exploded, it was thought the shaft was clear, hut apparently one of the workmen struck a can of gelignite with his pick when cleaning out the debris from the other charges. In this explosion Edward Glassop lost both eves, and AA’illiam Evans was also badly injured. In the AVhite Bay explosion six charges of gelignite were loaded, hut only two wore fired in. rock blasting operations. Two men. George Hall and John Fazov, went to examine the result of the two charges, when there was a terrific explosion, one of the other charges igniting. Hall had both legs blown off and Fazey received severe injuries. The explanation of the ignition of the third charge is a mvstery. LATER. Hall, the victim of tho AA bite Bay explosion, died in the hospital.
