[Reuter Telegrams.] MEAT WAli. ■WASHINGTON, July 15. , A preliminary investigation has begun to determine whether the meat V, Piiccs are being increased in the United States to enable the American packers (o undersell their British rivals abroad. The Department of Agriculture lias taken cognisance of the British packers’ charges that the American consumers are paying the expenses of an international price war. The Department’s officials have declared that its agents in the field Will make a preliminary investigation, after which a major investigation will be launched if the evidence warrants it. The American packers deny the charges. U The Agricultural Department so far ) has received no reports of a price war f as affecting the home market. Other t Government economic authorities state that the contest between American and British firms is centralised in the Argentine. Mr Hoover admits that there is a contest, but he believes that it has not affected the United States domestic trade or prices.
