The belief of the inhabitants of the villago of Suaucourt, near Gray, in the department of the Haute Saone, thjit all the houses in the village are haunted has led to an interesting geological discovery. For nearly twenty years the priest has been..pestered by parishioners with stories of mysterious spirit tappings. He dismissed,these as absurd until the reports became so persistent that he spent a night in one of the Haunted rooms.

The abbe was obliged to confess that be heard inexplicable rumblings and rushing sounds. The village is on a rocky broken plateau, and he set out to explore the surroundings in detail. He was soon surprised to find small fissures in the rocks, froffi. which on very cold days vapour issued.

He sent to Paris for a scientist who after a fortnight’s research 7 with microphones and special apparatus, has determined the existence beneath tho foundations of the village of a huge subterranean cavity.

This the scientist estimates to be at least GOO feet deep, and separated into two sections in the bottom of which is a roaring river. The action of the waters of this river produces from time to time collapses of rock and mysterious rushing sounds.

SEA MOUNTAIN TUNNEL. PARIS, June 2. With the firing of dynamite cartridges that blew away the last barriers, the sea rushed to-day into the liigges shipping tunnel in the world. It was the five-miles long tunnel beneath the mountains linking Marseilles to the great sea-water inland lake known as the Ktang de Berre. The tunnel 'will create a direct route between Marseilles and Central Europe by way of the Rhone Canal and the great inland waterways of the Continent with which the Rhone to Rhine Canal is ■connected. Barges up to 1,200 tons burden will be able to pass through the tunnel, and oven to pass one another in it. BURIED GOLD. NEW YORK, June 2. Buried gold to tbe value of £40,000 was found yesterday on a farm near Demopolis, Alabama. It was hidden there by General Nathan Whitfield during the Civil War in 18G5 to prevent its capture by the Union troops. His son Cayon Whitfield recently discovered the key to the hidden treasure left by his father. He employed 20 negroes at digging for a week.

The treasure was found buried in ail old powder barrel. It consists mainly of 20 and 50-dollar gold pieces minted in 1850. SOLICITOR SHOT DEAD. DUBLIN, June 7. To-night the sound of a shot was heard to come from a room in a tenement house in Gardner-street, Dublin, used- as an office by William J. Ryan, a solicitor. The police found the office door locked. They demanded that it should be opened. After a lifele it was opened by a man who gave the name of Daniel Joseph Gleason, a law student. 011 the floor lay the dead body of the’ solicitor, Ryan, with a bullet wound in the head. A revolver was found on the floor. Gleason was arrested and charged with murder.
