In the Victorian Legislative Assembly, the Premier introduced a motion as follows: “that this House is of opinion that no financial scheme can ’ be assented to by the States which does not provide for their receiving from the Commonwealth a- fixed annual payment of not less than twentyfive shillings per head of the population, and that there should bo no departure from tho present financial relations between tho States and the Commonwealth without the fullest consideration :-at a constitutional session, and tho approval of tho people a a referendum. ' SYDNEY, July 14. A deputation of country sawmill owners asked Hon. Mr Baddeley for a fifty per cent reduction in the premiums to he paid under tho Workers’ Compensation Act for mill and hush workers. They stated that, as in other states, the timber industry in New South Wales would die, as already 37 sawmills had been compelled to close. Air Baddeley promised consideration. AUSTRALIAN! The next decision is due to apathy and opposition in New South Wales and pronounced opposition in the Queensland Graziers’ Assn. PREMIER'S CAR RUNS INTO A TRAIN. HOBART, July 16. A motor car conveying Premier Lyons; Speaker of the Assembly, O’Keefe; Curtis, Atanager of flic Hydro Electric Department and Fulton, driver, rail into the van of a goods train at a level crossing near Launceston. ATI the occupants of the car were thrown out and badly injured. Tho Premier sustained a fracture of the right leg and abrasions to the face and hands. O’Keefe is the worst sufferer, his leg being broken, his shoulder crushed and his head and face injured. Curtis received head injuries and a severe shock. Tho driver received concussion and head injuries.
