He objects to the City Council’s retiring allowance which is much less than he would receive in England. HOSPITAL COMMISSION. AUCKLAND. July 13. Auckland Hospital Commission of inquiry formally opened this morning by the Commissioner A. Gray, K.C., and was adjourned till August ninth, as the counsel were engaged in tlie meantime, being occupied at the Supremo Court sessions. The Commissioner agreed that, the New Zealand Institute of Architects he cited to give evidence, ancl it was stated by counsel that it might lie necessary to cite the Board's consulting engineer, A. 3. Walker.
SAMOAN MODEL VILLAGE. AUCKLAND, July 15
A report front Apia. Samoa, states: Following upon instructions lrom tli« Administrator. Sir George Richardson. Chief Eaunlitina started over a year ago to remodel his village ot Lepea. The re-modelled village was officially opened by the Administrator in the presence of a large gathering of natives, officials and visitors from Tofun and HALS. Laburnum. The village presents a fine picture with its now Fales. formed in semi-circle, and huge nialnc much bigger titan a tootball area, in the centre. All the cookhouses. etc-., lie well behind the big Kales, and the orderly arrangement of houses is sure to benefit the health of the peoole of the village. His Excellency complimented Fauiuunina and liis people on being the first in the field with a new village. He spoke in high praise of the fine work that had been done. Some people had said he would not be able to get Samoans to re-model their villages, but he was glad- to find these people were mistaken. Another line village at Saleiinn was nearing completion, and promises to be one of the largest and best in all Samoa.
A VAGRANT’S DEATH. AUCKLAND. July 15. Lucie Mnckic, 46, brought from Henderson on a. charge of vagrancy in an exhausted condition, after being seen by a doctor, was sent to the hospital and died. The hodv of a middle-aged man was found on the railway lute at Teku , near Te Kniti. early this morning. P. 1 ers on the body indicate the deceased was A- A. Adams, his wife and fain, > residing at Morton Junction The train evidently struck the deceased fifteen yards north of the flag station, and he was dragged that distance. He was frightfully mangled. Luggage was found in the station belonging to the deceased. It is not known what train struck him.
OPPOSED TO PURCHASE. AUCKLAND. July L 5. The Executive of the Takapuna Central Ratepayers’ Association, passed unanimously a resolution expressing strongly the opinion that the action of the Borough Council in taking an option on the proposal to purchase a tramway and ferry service For £65.000 was premature, and decided to oppose such action. UNEMPLOYED. DUNEDIN, July 15. The unemployed total, now is 338. At the Magistrates Court, William McMillan pleaded guilty to selling milk containing less than 3J per cent, of milk and fat; also, to selling milk on two occasions containing 23 and 10/ pur cent, of water. lie tins convicted and lined sums totalling £ls and costs £3 10s. SHOP AFIRE. OTAKT, July 15. A fire broke out at 1f).30 o’clock last night in the business portion of tlie town, the back portion of Cockrell’s shop catching alight. Luckily it was noticed by passers by, who subdued the fire before the Brigade arrived. The damage is covered by the insurance: A one armed fireman, Claude Pike, fell through a window and broke bis arm.
