At the sale of town sections yesterday, two sections in Hampden Street 1 routing the Hokitika racecourse were purchased by the Westland Racing Club at tlie upset price of £3O. Business people in London street, Lyttelton on Tuesday afternoon were startled by it lout! crash of breaking glass, the' result of a most peculiar accident. A young man, in crossing the road by Canterbury street missed bis (footing when stepping from the high roadside to the low kerbing. The stumble caused him t.o fall forward. and before lie could straight on up bis head and shoulders . crashed through a plate-glass window in an unoccupied shop owned by Mi •!. H. Collins. The young man bad a most miraculous escape, tor "1 large sln.et of glass fell, just missing him.

A serious accident happened \csteid:iv afternoon about 1 o clock to Ml Thomas Stuart, the well-known sawmiller. He was in the bush of the Kanieri-llokitika Sawmill Company at Stonev Creek. When a tree was being cut down, a limb of the tree fell striking Mr Stuart on the head and neck, knocking him unconscious. Word' was at once sent into town and Dr Baird and the ambulance went out, and after receiving attention he was brought into Westland Hospital where he is receiving treatment-. Mr Stuart regained consciousness on the way down, and later in the evening received further attention, lie had a fairly good night and is doing as well as can be expected. The main injuries are to the top of the head and the neck. His many friends will wish for his speedy recovery.

“Go for your life, the police are coming round the corner!” shouted Ivan M’Guire to a young man who knocked down 1111 old man in Hereford Street on the evening of June 3. The young man evidently “went for his life,” for the police have not captured him yet. But they Hook charge of M’Guire, who was charged at the Magistrate's Court, Christchurch, on Tuesday with obstructing a police constable in the execution of bis duty. M’Guire denied that lie knew the young man in question, and said lie did not think be bad caused any obstruction—merely given the young man a helping hand. He bad not been with a. crowd of fellows at the time. He was fined £5 and costs. /

Efforts are being made to refloat the Port Kembla, which is ashore on the island of San Salvador, one of the .Bahama group, off the coast of Florida. Meagre details only arc available, but it is known that the vessel, which is in command of Captain .0. van den Bergh, is carrying only South Island cargo. It was on .Tune 20 that the Port Kembla. left London .for Dunedin. No information is available Us to the damage done, hut advice so iar recoiled is to the effect that there is a fair amount of water ill No. 2 hold, and that coal is being jettisoned in .an effort to refloat the vessel. During fhe war the original Port Kembla was lost off Cape Farewell, and the vessel now ashore at San Salvador was built to 10place her. She is one of ihc Commonwealth 'and Dominion line of vessels, and has been engaged on 11 direct service from London to Dunedin and Lyttelton. The Port Kembla was built at Newcastle in 1922 and has a tonn«t££o of 843 d.
