CRICKET.
[Australian it N.Z. Cable Association."! LONDON, July 11. Tlio Labour paper, the “ Daily Herald,” says: “'Phe worst of employing 'veil known cricketers to write about the test matches is they must have something to say. Thus they are abusing Carr lor putting in the Austra-
lians. This gave them a great opportunity to express themselves. Let it go! We have been expecting overmuch of human nature. Yet how unfair is such criticism 1 ’ Carr acted, like a man, on his own judgment. He took a chance which failed. He deserves sympathy and not abuse.” • TREVOR'S COMMENT. LONDON, July 11. Colonel Trevor writes: “Personally, I think Carr’s decision in sending the Australians in was absolutely right, if the sun had continued shining brightly, as it was shining when they tossed, Carr’s policy would have come ofF, but ten minutes afterwards, the sun sulkily retired. If Carr’s catch from Macartney had come off, then ho would have been idolised for his good judgment, f believe that Macartney would have been signally brilliant if Lockwood. Peel, Barnes or Rhodes had been bowling?.” FAULKNER CONDEMNS SELECTORS. LONDON, July 11. Faulkner writes: “At tbc risk of losing what shred of cricketing reputation f ever possessed, I confess that
1 am in total agreement with Carr’s decision. Nothing beforehand could have told him that the wicket would play ridiculously easy, or that the bowler? would perform so poorly. An amazing tilling was the Selection Committee’s decision to omit Parker after deciding that the wicket was treacherous enough to send tho Australians in. With a suitable bowler, he says, the Australians would have been dismissed, for a moderate total. I feel strongly that the English howlers let Carr, down.” Faulkner describes Macartney’s innings as the most amazing he has ever seen.
