VETERINARY SURGEONS
A REGISTRATION BILL. - WELLINGTON, July 17. ■ 1 ho Bill lor the registration of veterinary surgeons, which was read a first time in the House of Representatives to-day, is on the lines of other similar measures that have been enacted in recent years. Registration is to bo under the control of a- Board consisting of a registrar, to be appointed from among the veterinary surgeons in the employ of the Department of Agriculture, one person to be appointed on tile recommendation of ihe Minister of Agriculture, , and two veterinary surgeons to he .! appointed on tho recommendation of • the New Zealand Veterinary Surgeons’ j Association. All except the registrar V . are to bo appointed for a term of threo years, and are to receive suitable allowances and travelling ox- •■* ponses. The registrar is to bo chair- \ man. To bo entitled to registration an applicant must he: (a) A member of tho Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, London; or (b) a. graduate or diplomce in veterinary modjeino and surgery of any other institution requiring a course of at least four years’ study of the appropriate subjects and recognised by tho Government of its own country and by the Board as a proper and efficient teaching institution. If an applicant is not qualified under either heading, ho must satisfy the t Board that lie. was employed or was
practising as a veterinary surgeon in Now Zealand at the date of the commencement of tho Act, and that, lie is a graduate, or diplomce in veterinary medicine and surgery of an institution similarly recognised and approved which requires a course of three year’s study for its degree or diploma. Applications under this"heading must he made within oneja" year of the commencement of the Act. There are the usual provisions for cancelling registration for misconduct, and fur the hearing of appeals and for the gazetting of an annual list of such registered veterinary surgeons as desire their names to he so published, and pay tho prescribed fee. A penalty of £2O is prescribed for the use by any unregistered .person of tho title of veterinary surgeon, veterinarian, veterinary practitioner, or any other that may cause any person to believe him to be a registered veterinary surgeon.
