Yesterday afternoon, under ideal weather conditions, and the presence of a large number of visitors, the substantial and powerful dredge that has been placed on the one-time prolific, gold-field of Maori Creek, in the locality known as Dungnnville, was named and formally started upon its activities by the managing director of the New River Dredging Company, Mr P. N. Ivingswell. The sight of the fine new machine, the second largest dredge in the Dominion, betokened not only the march of mechanical art hut the transition of the industry of gold production from the small dredge stage to that upon which this country is now entering, as the result of the larger type of dredges from America. The area to he worked is roughly about a mile in length, and averages close on half a mile in width, some of the best being known to lie near the centre. The length of tlie hull is 123 feet, and the width 34 feet. (Tlie Rimu dredge is 117 feet long and 50 feet wide). The dredging capacity is 20 cubic yards per hour. Tlie superstructure is of hircli and ’hardwood and is proving bircli to lie of great use in such construction. The dredge has an electrical equipment. The machinery worked with absolute smoothness yesterday.
