[BT TELEGRAPH—rER TRESS ASSOCIATION.] AMALGAMATION PROPOSAL LOST. ROTORUA, June 29. A meeting of the shareholders of tho Rotorua Co-operative Dairying Company was held this afternoon to consider a motion as follows: “That this Company bo amalgamated with the Xow Zealand Co operative Dairy Coy.. Ltd., in accordance with the terms contained in an agreement already prepared and expressed to be made between this Company and the New Zealand C’o-operative Dairy Coy., Ltd. ; and that the directors he hereby authorised to carry the same i ilo effect witli such modification (if any) as they may deem expedient.”
After much discussion, the resolution was put to the meeting. The voting was: 127 for. and 81 against. A three-fourths majority being necessary, tlio resolution was declared lost. The Chairman declared his intention to bring the proposal forward again in twelve months’ time. UNION SECRETARY SEED. CHRISTCHURCH. June 29. Edward Oldridge, a carpenter, proceeded against Ernest Charles Sutcliffe, Labour Union Secretary for £5 2s wages lost through defendant allegedly having made untrue state, merits that, plaintiffs was not a unionist. Plaintiff nllegedn that he had been dismissed from his employment as the result of what defendant told his employers.
Defendant applied for a non-suit on the grounds that there was no evidence to show that Sutcliffe had made any attempts to have Oldridge dismissed or that ho bad been maliciously disposed towards him. The Magistrate said Sutcliffe had shown over zoalotisness, through which Oldridge had suffered. A nonsuit would he granted, as there was no evidence to show that Sutcliffe bad said that Oldridge was not a istThe Uni on then proceeded against Oldridge for 26s arrears of dues, less 14s paid into Court. Judgment was given for the Lis. The defendant was allowed rosts.
A COURT SC EXE. OmUSTCH.UR.cn, June 39. (.laimjiig the Arbitration Court had given no, valid reason for refusing to make a.u award for eruteheis, A. Cook, representing tho Union, brought a sharp retort from the Reach. Cook said if the Court slill refused to fix a. minimum rate .the union would immediately petition flic Government. Judge Frazer: “ i don’t care twopence what you do. You have no right to put to this Court what seems like a threat. It would he a very sad thing for the Court to sit hack and consider what the Government would think before making irn award. No Court can he influenced by threats.” Cook said three to four thousand men were deprived of an award.
Justice Frazer: “The Court has no wish to keep eruteheis out of the award. \Ye know the difficulties and want you to show how to overcome the matter, which should he settled by a conference.”
INCOME TAX APPEAL. AUCKLAND. June 30
At the Supreme Court, Justice Stringer heard an appeal from tho .Magistrate’s decision upholding the penal assessment of income tax imposed by the Commissioner of Taxes on Frank Jacentlio, a farmer, of Peria. Counsel stated the appellant in 1920 furnished an income tax i return which rendered him liable to taxation amounting to £9 16s 6d. In December, 1923, an inspector of the Department investigated the appellant’s position with the result that an amended assessment was made and appellant was charged t.ax amounting to £571 2s. Justice Stringer said he was satisfied the appellant had wilfully and deliberately evaded the first payment and that the penal tax should he imposed. He had shown the profits to Ve £502 when they should have been shown as £3214.
REFORM CAUCUS. WELLINGTON, June 30.
A caucus of tho Reform Party ths morning reappointed Mr J. S. Dickson (Parnell) as Senior Whip and Mr W. S. Glen (Rangitikei) as Junior Whip. It was decided to nominate a. member of tho party for the Chairmanship of Committees in the House, though no name was divulged.
Mr J. S. Dickson was appointed Reform Party representative at the Empire Parliamentary delegation to Australia.
