CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

The Canterbury Education Board met at Christchurch on Friday last, present—Messrs T. Hughes (chairman), W. A. Banks, J. Maze, G. AY. Arraitage, AV. H. AVinsor, G. J. Gotv, E. if. Andrews, C. S. Thompson, A\ . Johnson. R. AVild and AV. P. Spencer.

Appointments made included the following:—-Blackball, Miss C. M. Fox, assistant mistress; Upper Koiterttngi, .Miss 11. Johnstone, sole teacher; Hunaiiga, Miss All. Muir, (substitute assistant).

A. Tetter was received I tom the Deportment. stating that the representation on the boards of management for ihe Christchurch Technical College, Ashburton Technical School, Greymouth Technical College, and I imam Technical School would he the same for 1920-27 as for 1925-20. The hoard fixed August as the month during which elections will he held to lill vacancies caused by retiring members. It was reported that two meetings of householders had been held in connexion with the following schools, but that no committees had heel) elected. The following gentlemen had been recommended as commissioners. Xgnl,pre. Messrs J. Donaldson and G. GibC. Sumner, and J. Flaherty. BUfLDING CO.MAITTTEE.

Air Afarkny (West Coast Truant Officer) reported having visited six schools, interviewed five parents, and sent notices to right. It was resolved to reply that as .the attendance at Evans’ Creek is only seven the establishment- of a permanent school is not warranted. Greymout!i—A letter was received from the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade thanking the Bo'ird for its donation of £.‘l 3s in asknowledgeinent of Hie Brigade’s services in connection with the fire at the school. Hatters—ft was resolved to ask Air Wild to submit a report in regard La the letter received from the teacher advising tbit the wood and coal shed at the school had been destroyed by fire early on Thursday morning. HHh June, r, euchre .party having been held in the school on Wednesday night. Hokitika—lt. was decided to request Mr Wild to report on the commit tee's application for: - (1) erection of a new fence around the school: (ill painting of exterior of school.

Jack’s Afill—A report- was received front Inspector Trwin recommending that the school room be divided 'or a curtain: that tin- porch be extended the full length of the building and that both rooms be given access to the porch. Tt w'is resolved to apply to the Department for n grant to enable this recommendation to be given effect to.

Kaiata- The Foreman to he ilislrivted to report in regard to the following improvements at the school recommended by the Aledieal Officer of Health:—(ll provision of suitable ventilators in the walls and roof of the school building; (lD construction of a. shelter shod for the convenience of tho scholars during play and lunch limes: (3) substitution of pit system for pan system.

Rnnanga—ft was decided to accede to the committee's (1) request for provision of new blinds for windows of school; (21 the Foreman ho take action as deemed advisable in connectin'! with the committee’s application for placing of sheet iron on walls near the stoves in the teachers’ room ami the corridor of tho infants’ classroom to protect the building from tire; (3) Mu' Foreman to he risked to report on jho committee's application for an addilinnal chimney for extra fireplace in infants’ classroom.

Ruining!! —A report, was received from the Senior Inspector regardiug the ci'.inm it tee's application for a partition in the infants’ classroom so that the class may fie divided into two. Mr McLeod stated that the WVst Coast Inspector was of opinion tbi.it it would lie unwise to divide the room as suggested by the committee but considered that a curtain should he supplied. The report was adopted. the Foreman to provide a curtain, and a copy of the Inspector’s report to tie forwarded to the committee. Ruru—The Foreman to lie- instructed to take any action deemed necessary in respect of the committee’s application for renewal of boys’ lavatory. Tavlorville—The committee wrote applying for payment of 'account of £<3 los for repair of fence and provision of drainage through playgrounds, as authorised by Inspector Irwin. Tt was resolved that consideration of the application he deferred pending receipt of /a report from Inspector Irwin. Correspondence was received from the committee drawing attention to shocking conditions at the school and asking that the proposed remodelling he commenced at the earliest. possible date. It was decided to reply that the proposed remodelling is on the urgent list of works and will he proceeded with when a grant has hern approved by the Department. AGRICULTURAL INSPECTOR. Air AV. H. Johnston. Agricultural Inspector reported for May and June— As the mid-winter vacation occupied the latter part of May, there is vory little to report for the, month. I visited 'as follows:—Tvokiri, Greymouth primary for Std. 5, Tavlorville. South ■Spit. Rnru. Arcana, and Camerons. The weather conditions were such that practically nothing could be done outside. At present the weather is fine and it is hoped that the hitter h-alf of the winter will be good. The judging !of the Agricultural plot which wo hoped to get done during tlie vacation has been delayed on account of the weather. From . 10norts sent in, T gather that many of the plots Live failed, but wo hope to be able in inspect and judge those Hint are worth it during this month. Air Tnvin. Inspector of Schools, accompanied me on my visit to Camerons, and the question of re-fencing the rilot, and continuing a beautifying scheme was gone into with Air Wilson. the new teacher. Last your tile committee fenced the front boundary and this year it. is proposed to paint the fence and plant a live hedge. There is also a larger question of a drain for the Lick part c-F the grounds, but a considerable amount of money will be required for that.—Received.
