[nv telegraph-—rEU press association.] THE CENSUS. WELLINGTON. June 19. The very complete arrangements made for the taking of the census of the Dominion and for the computation of the results, enabled the Government Statistician (Air Malcolm Fraser), to hand to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. Mr Bollard) to-day the preliminary totals. The returns show that the total population of New Zealand, inclusive of Alfioris, and exclusive of Western Samoa, and Cook and other. Islands to he 1.-107.105, and 1,3-14,384; excluding the Maoris.
TRAWLING INSIDE LIMIT. AUCKLAND, June 20,
John Veale. master of the trawler, “Countess,” owned by Sanford, Ltd. was fined £5 for trawling inside Ft e limits ill Hauraki Gulf.
The Magistrate, Mr Cutten. said he did lint think that the defendant had any deliberate intention, hut he was cutting it too fine. He had no business to take risks. The Magistrate sfiid, that in the" circumstances, he did not think that the master should have a further penalty imposed on him.
A DISTRESSING ACCIDENT. TAURANGA, June 21
’ A distressing accident occurred here yesterday afternoon. Robert Gray, aged 10. went out alone in a launch and it appears that near the harbour entrance the engine gave trouble, back-fired and threw Gray down and rendered him unconscious. The launch took fire and the hoy was seriously burnt on the lace, arms and legs. Later he regained consciousness and despite his injuries rowed in a dinghy a short distance, when he was seen and taken to the hospital where lie lies in a critical condition. The launch was badly burned and sank.

Donald Crossan, who was killed at Hillside Workshops, went to the war with the Third Reinforcements, and remained with the N.Z.E.F. till the conclusion of hostilities. He v.as prominent in League football, and .valargely responsible for the formation of the Kaikorii League Club. In addition to being mi active player, aed captain of his club’s team, he renresented Otago twice against Cnnieroury in 1024. He also played the Rugby code 'as n member of the Kail; wai first fifteen.
CHILD FRACTURES ITS SKULL. AUCKLAND. June 21. A ten months’ old child. Robert Newby, whose parents reside at Grey Lynn fell on a stone pavement and fractured his skull. He died at the hospital.

H is practically certain that the All Blacks will he seen in action against Auckland representatives after returning from New South Males. Ihe All Blacks will leave Sydney on July 30th.. and should reach Auckland on August fil’d., and it is hoped to arrange a. match against Auckland for Wednesday. Sept. 4th.

A magnificent elephant seal was stranded on a’mild-flat at Otahidiu. Tt was captured after a hard fight and taken to the zoo. LAUNCH RETURNS. AUCKLAND, June 21.
After drifting helplessly in the Hauraki Gulf for several days the small fishing yacht "Restless,” with two occupants, Norman Patterson and Charles Morgan, was towed hack to Auckland from Motutapu last night. They had engine trouble at Motutapu. On Wednesday they walked across the island and had been living on fish for two days and had no food for 24 hours. NOTED PASSENGER. AUCKLAND, June 21.
A passenger arriving in the Niagara, due at noon to-day is Rev. J. K. Jones, sometimes referred to as tbo non-Con-formist Bishop of England. He delivers addresses in Auckland, and then leaves for Wellington en route to Australia.
