BRITAIN AND RUSSIA. LONDON, June 17. In the House of Lords, replying iu Lord Newton’s inquiry respecting Pus sii’.u strike money, Lord Balfour said the avowed object of the Soviet Government wits “to destroy our social system.” The presumption was that the money was not contributed by the workers, but by the Soviet Oovernmen. He was not quite sure Hint we should have recognised the Soviet. That was an arguable point, but there wus a great difference breaking off rotations and not entering into relations at all. DE CLIFFORD’S MARRIAGE. LONDON, June 17

Tn connection with the marriage of the young Earl De Clifford, which took place on March loth., the Earl was charged with making a false declaration for the purpose of obtaining a marriage license, in which he gave bis age as 22 years, instead of 19 years, and in which lie stated that his name was Edward Russell, and bis father’s name .lack Russell. Ho stall'd be was an engineer earning bis own living.

The Earl gave evidence that if lie bud given correct particulars, lie would have required lii.s mother’s conr-ent to the marriage, which would not have

been given. Counsel appealed to the Bench to take a romantic view of the ease. LYi Clifford fell in love with a charming girl, and lie acted openly. Ihe Court held that the action was inexcusable, and fined firm £SO. and £lO lOs costs.

GLASGOW SCRAPPED. LONDON, June 17. The Warship Olasgow which escaped in the Coronel naval disaster, during the war, and which later assisted .Admiral Sturdee to take revenge upon the German squadron at the Falkland Islands has been scrapped. NOTED ACTRESS SHOT. LONDON. June 18. Mademoiselle Regime IHery, (he noted French actress, was discovered shot dead in her room, in the Drury Lane Theatre. Mtllle. Elory. accompanied by a woman friend, entered tile theatre and conversed with an official regarding nil engagement which she was anxious to secure in a forthcoming production. Later a shot was hoard, and an attendant found Millie Elory lying on the floor wounded in the head, with a revolver alongside her.

FIELD MARSHAL’S SON BANKRUPT. LONDON. June 17. Captain Thomas Plainer, son of Field .Marshal Plainer, lias been examined in bankruptcy. His liabilities are £1345. His only assets were a pair of cuff links, valued at fifty shillings. The chief cause of his bankruptcy was a prosecution for being drunk while in charge of a motor-ear. The case itself was dismissed, hut it cost him £IOOO. Debts of a former bankruptcy of his were paid in full liv selling bis life interest in his father’s grant from the nation. PORTUGUESE POLITICS. LISBON, Juno 17. Another revolution has started in Portguul. General Gomez Daeosta, the War Minister, after a warlike demonstration. placed himself at the head of the Government, owing to disssensions with Senator Cahet/vlas. LISBON, June 18.

General Daeosta His decided to take over the Premiership of Portugal b’mself. He has requested the officials of the Prime .Minister's office to assist him in forming a ministry.

BRITISH AIRSHIP PLANS. LONDON, June 17

In the House of Commons, Sir Harry Brittain (Conservative) enquired whether negotiations were in progress for continuing an airship service from India to Australia.

Sir E. Honre (Air Minister) stated that no actual negotiations were in progress, hut they had every hope that their present scheme of airship development would lead to a regular service to Australia.

The Foreign Office has received information from, Russia formally annexing a section of Mongolia. The authorities are perturbed by constant reports of Soviet advances southward in the rear of Peking.
