Total for six wickets 148 Stumps were drawn. (Received this day at 11.0 a.m.) LONDON. June 17. The weather was fine and toe wicket easy, and the attendance twelve thousand. The start of the innings was very quiet. A liberal amount of sawdust was used. The batsmen gave constant attention to the pitch. The first lour overs produced a single. At five there- was an exciting episode. Collins played Robinson to Kilner at fine leg. The latter slipped and Ikirdsley called on Collins to run. The latter declined. Hardsley was then half way down the pitch and slipped and fell but scrambled back to the c-reaso with a narrow margin to spare. Hardsley when six had a lucky escape. He was unable to get out of the way of a rising ball from Robinson, but Dolphin missed the catch. After half an hour’s play in wbit'l) eleven runs were made, six successive maidens were bowled. Macaulay and Robinson maintained an excellent length and kept the batsmen on the alert. Hardsley showed an inclination to make shots on the offside. Robinson played up to him but Hardsley declined temptations. Collins was equally careful. The first hour yielded twenty-two. Robinson, who was bowling consistently and well drew first blood. Collins diverted a ball front hint into the hands of Macaulay at third slip who held it well low down.
Macartney was slinky at (be opening and was beaten by the first two balls from Robinson. Thereafter he imparted liitieb-itcecled life into the game. He straight drove- Robinson and off-drove Waddington. Macaulay’s length at times was uncertain but the batsmen treated him respectfully. Tho brightness was momentary, as the appearance of Kilner and Waddington with the ball demanded care and the scoring relapsed into an occasional single, which was all good fielding permitted. Eventually Kilner got Hardsley with his leg in front of the wicket., the board then showing 2 for 5!). Bardslay was a monument of patience. Woodful was in difficulties at the opening and rain which was threatening for an hour commenced to fall, but play continued. The light was poor. At eighty-three Woodful was beaten by Rhodes’ fourth ball and the next ball Andrews drove to Lupton at deep mid-on and started to run, but fell full length in the middle of the pitch and was unable to get borne before Rhodes had broken the wicket. Taylor then attempted a short run and was run out by a brilliant return by Kilner, who threw down the wicket from mid-on. ’l’lie total tit this stage was 83 For 5. Richardson in the first over from Rhodes gave an easy chance to Waddington at first slip, which he failed to hold. Macartney all the time was playing confidently but cautiously. Richardson played both Rhodes and Macaulay with superb in-
[ifferenee. Shortly atter tea Macart,ey fell a victim to a ball which struek lis leg. and was slightly faster than
the preceding ones. He Lit one six and five fours and gave an excellent all round disola.v. The sixth wicket bad added thirty-one. Richardson when eighteen was missed by Rhodes at cover'off Kilner. Richardson and Ryder carried on attractively till 0.30 when rain compelled an adjournment. Play was resumed at 6.10 but aftei four overs an appeal against the lightwas upheld.
