[nv telegraph—per press association - ,] THEFTS FROM LETTERS. CHRISTCHURCH, June 10. A youth who stole money from liis employers, and handed it over to liis mother for the payment of household accounts, appeared before Mr H. A. Young S.AI.. this morning. He pleaded “ guilty ” to each of three charges of taking letters containing money, the total amount involved being C2 4s 4d. Chief Detective Gibson said that the youth who was seventeen and a-hnlf, had detained 700 letters that the police discovered. The youth took money home and gave it to liis mother, who paid tradesmen with it, and in this way the notes were traced. The boy had since changed his employment. The firm for whom he was now working were willing to take him back. His family history was rather unfortunate.
l The Magistrate said that, in the circumstances. li(' intended to give the accused another chance, fro would bo admitted to probation for two years, and ordered to refund the money as the Probation Officer directed. On the recommendation of the Probation Officer. he would make an order for the suppression of his name.
THEFT FROM HOTEL. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 16. “ It was just a drunken escapade. They arc making a mountain out nf a mole, just because I’m a stranger bore,” said Tbomas Ryan, the cook on the schooner Margaret Sterling, when charged in the Magistrate’s Court with the theft oi a gold watch and chain (valued at £27 10s), shirts (12s (id), and an overcoat (Co), a cardigan (Cl), and a razor (12s 6d) from the Breakwater Hotel. The police stated that pakapoo was patronised at the premises by many men and women. WELLINGTON CITY OFFICERS. WELLINGTON. June 16. To-night from a large number of applicants the City Council appointed, ns Town Clerk Mr J. R. Howard Roberts, aged thirty-five, married, assistant Town 'Clerk of Liverpool City. As City Engineer, Mr (i. A, Hart, fifty-six. married, sewerage engineer to the Leeds City Corporation, Yorkshire, was appointed. CUTTING OUT PERMITS. WELLINGTON. June 10. The Government has decided not to grant in future applications for licenses to conduct raffles in which niinoral specimens form the prizes, and to introduce legislation amending the Gaming Act. in that direction. Hie edict is not to apply to cases in which licenses have already been provided, and th>e conditions of the Act arc complied with. The decision of the Government will nut affect small art unions, in wide' works of art, paintings, drawings, and sculpture are the prizes offered. A FATALITY. AUCKLAND. June 10. Patrick To.evan, aged 20, residing at To Papapa, fell off a motor _ lorry when returning - with friends after a foot hall match on Saturday, and sustained injuries to his head.s.-. He ’ able to proceed to bis borne, but became unconscious, and sent to t' hospital. An operation was perform ed, but lie died on Sunday night.
