CHRISTCHURCH. June 9. “ Nugafolios, Mr A. Amlreson’s b g, by Brent Loeanda-Genoral -Mac mare.” That is a name which might have appeared on trotting cards in future, hut for the fact that the hoard of the New Zealand Trotting Association this morning gave it an emphatic “No. Mr R. A. Armstrong demurred when the name was submitted for registration. “ Nugafonos.” he said meditatively. “ it is not a very nice name. Can’t we have better names for our trotters ?”

“■What does it mean?” queried another member. “It has just occurred to me.” said Mr J. B. Norris, secretary, “that it is ‘ son of a gun ’ spelt, backwards.” “ Oh.” said members, and promptly decided that ‘son of a gun’ backwards, should not race on New Zealand trotting tracks.

NEW MINISTER SWORN IN. WELLINGTON. June 12. The Hon K. S. Williams was sworn in as a member of the Executive Council at Government House this morning. The Ministers present were the Prime Minister, Hon W. Nosworthy, Hon 0. J. Anderson. Hon R. F. Bollard, Hon 0. -J. Hawken and Hon F. J. Rolleston. Air Williams will take up his duties next week, and will probably occupy for the coming session a suite in the old wooden portion of Government House recently vacated by the Prime Minister. No secretarial appointment to the new Minister has yet been made. SHORTAGE OF WATER. - WELLINGTON, June 11. Owing to the scanty rainfall the Mangahao power system is affected. The level of the water in the dam has bo?n falling and a call has been made on the Evans Bay City Station and the Palmerston North station to assist at the heaviest periods. A big increase in consumption has brought the demand on Mangahao up to capacity. This will lie relieved when the third dam is completed. A Public Works official states that there is no occasion for alarm and assistance will onlv be required during peak loads.
