COAL TROUBLE

[Australian N.Z. Cable Association.] MR. BALDWIN'S ADMISSION LONDON, June 10. In the House of Commons, in reply to questions, Mr Baldwin, the Prime Minister, said lie regretted that he was unable to dissent from the conclusion contained in the Coal Commission’s report that it would need years to bring into effect all tbe measures of reorganisation for the coal industry which the Commissioner suggested, while in the meantime the present hard economic conditions had to be faced. An impending disaster was only to lie averted by an immediate reduction in the working costs, by means of lower wages or longer hours.

Mr Baldwin added that lie had heard no alternative proposals for meeting the immediate situation, except that the taxpayer should resume the burden of maintaining the coal industry.
