The subject for the prepared speech, open section, is, “Westland, the Tourist Paradise.” Mr Moss is to select the pieces for the vocal and musical numbers. Those for songs in character and humorous items will he the competitor’s own choice. As the competition is fixed for August 23rd. and 24th. particulars with regard to the competition will he circulated as noon as possible. Special prizes were offered by those present, including two volumes by ])r Kennedy and two specials by All Partridge. Alembership tickets were circulated for sale and donations to the prize fund will lie acceptable and may be forwarded through any member of the. committee. On Tuesday morning a Ministerial car was driven up to the main entrance of the old Parliament Buildings, Wellington, and turned round inside the portico. The driver put on the handbrake and entered the building. Apparently he did not put on the brake sufficiently hard, and the front wheels, being just over the dip on tlic downhill, set the car moving. It soon gained momentum, ran over the greensward. and across the path parallel with Boweil street, and crashed into a hardwood pole carrying the electric light wires, of which two out of three were broken. The post was not broken, but under the impact went oyer in the soft earth to an angle of 45 degrees, bringing the car to a standstill. Had the ear not struck the post nothing could have saved it from running over the bank into Bowen Street. The guard, lamps, and front of the car generally wore severely battered by the impact, but no one was hurt.
