DAME NELLIE MELBA ON SINGING.
“The Afelba Alethod,” by Dame Nellie Alelba, is a book of vocal exercises with a few wise prefatory words by the celebrated soprano.
She declares that good singing is easy, bad singing hard. She warns the student against- any effort by the shoulders in broithing. Tbe singer should concentrate on thinking of the message of the song. Then she says. “The eternal task of song can never bo finished in a single lifetime that is the beauty and fascination of the art.”
Cocktails and cigarettes are taboo. ■She recommends, cm the platform, a position with one foot rather before the other (the weight on the ball of the foot, not the heel), and with hands not tightly clenched hut holding something, say a folded programme. A singer should be ashamed of nervousness. She says, “Afemorise silently—‘silent singing’ is very useful.”
