Extremely interesting from a technical and also from an adventure point of view is the repairing of the whale chasers in dry dock at Port Chalmers. Two of these venturesome little craft have for several weeks past been haring their hull plates removed and frames straightened. Some of the 1 dates have had the dents removed and then returned to the hull. Other plates were more hadlv dented and needed renewing. The damage was sustained while wlialcchasing last summer amongst the ice sprinkled waters of the Ross Sen. When the two chasers, at present in dock are completed two more will take their places for similar repairing. Automatic riveting, acetone cutting, and electric welding are amongst the modern ship repairing appliances used on these vessels.
Smoked quinnat salmon, cured at Hakataramea, was introduced in small quantities to the Dunedin market last year. This season the supply has been on a more liberal scale, and it is turning out so good ill flavour, firmness and tenderness as to create a widespread demand. It is generally regretted that the season for this delicacy is now pretty well over. The first quinnat obtainable in New Zealand was'chilled in Canada and had a taste of its own that some connoisseurs did not like. Even fresh quinnat taken in our own. rivers is not yet firmly established as a common article of diet, hut smoked quinnat is a luxury and not expensive, and it seems likely to he asked for very .geuornflv in the future.
