["■Sydney Sun” Cables.] IX.S. POLITICS. NEW YORK, May 10. William S. Vare, of Philadelphia, an advocate of beers and wines, has secured Republican nomination to the United States Senate, defeating Senator G. W. Pepper, the present incumbent, and Governor Pinchot, the dry candidate. The wets hail it ns a victory while the drys point out the combined votes of Pepper and Pinchot are expected to exceed Vare’s by over 150,000. Vare’s biggest vote was in the cities and the other candidates in the rural districts. The Republican nomination practically means election in Pennsylvania. Meantime Governor Smith of New York announced he would sign a bill providing for a State referendum on the question whether the Volstead law should be liberalised by-vQongress. • Smith declared this was the only way to find how the people stand.
