COAL DEADLOCK
THE MINERS ATTITUDE. ' [Australia &• N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, Mav 20. The “Daily Mail” says that the minors rejected Mr Baldwin’s proposals becauso they believe the chairman of the Wtages Board would possess arbitrary powers in event of a. dispute. Owners and miners thus again refuse to help themselves, necessitating the Government imposing a settlement wherein the powers are limited, leading probably to a prolonged stoppage. ■MINERS AGAINST PROPOSALS. [“Sydney Sun” Cables.] (Received this day at 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 20.
Tho coal negotiations have reached a deadlock, despite certain hopes which rested on to-day’s conference. In addition to maintaining a determined attitude against reduction pending reorganisation, the miners expressed objection to a Wages Board with ian independent chairman being empowered to abolish the national minimum, and enforcing a varying minimum throughout the districts. A resolution containing these objections was forwarded to Mr Baldwin. Miners officials reassembled for a conference in the afternoon and adjourned until to-morrow. There will Iki an executive meeting to-night mainly due to the possibility of an answer arriving from Mr Baldwin. Officials do not disguise the gravity of the situation. They declare they will solidly adhere to their policy and iare expected to discuss to-morrow financial arrangements to carry on in the event of a continued deadlock.
