The local Telegraph Office had an unusual “ strike ” on yesterday. A meeting of all interested in promoting a juvenile elocutionary, vocal and instrumental competition here at a date to ho fixed, will he held at the County Chambers at I I o’clock on Saturday morning. The time has been fixed to suit the convenience of the school teachers, who, it is hoped, will be responsible for the preparation of the competition. The idea is one which should commend itself to those seeking to help the rising generation in tho effort to tit themselves the better for going into everyday life.

A circular has been issued by the New Zealand Country Clubs’ Association stating that it was intended at the forthcoming annual meeting in duly, to wait on the Government with regard to racing taxation. It was proposed also to seek an amendment to the Finance Act, whereby the Alinister of Finance was authorised to refund portion of the totalisator duty to Ik? expended for permanent improvement of courses to authorise an allowance where a debt had been incurred for improvements carried out in advance. It was further proposed to press for the right of clubs to receive money for totalisator investment by post or telegraph; to permit newspapers to publish dividends and where clubs desired, to instal the double totalisator. Further concessions to owners in regard to carriage of horses by rail and also a reduction of the tax on stakes would Ikj pressed for.
