THE EIGHT TO KILE A POLICEMAN. NEW YORK, -Man'll 20. Killing is no murder if the victim happens to he a policeman attempting to effect an arrest by force of arms. This is Chicago’s latest and most novel verdict in its great war between, criminals and officers of the law. ft has been estimated that eight ( hicago policemen are killed to one man convicted of murder.

The verdict was delivered yesterday by a jury convened to try two members of the famous Genoa gang oi bootleggers and criminals accused of murdering a policeman. Their counsel presented the following argument: “If a policeman detains you even for a moment against your will and you kill him you are not guilty of murder hut only of manslaughter. If the police officer uses force of terms you may kill him in self-defence and emerge, from the law unscathed.

The gangsters raised £20,000 for the defence of their comrades. Altogether 787 men were examined for service on the jury, and after most of them had, admitted that they feared the vengeance of the gang if they gave a verdict of guilty twelve were finally chosen. These accepted the doctrine formulated by counsel for the defence and returned a verdict of Not- Guilty. NJ2YV NARCISSUS. LONDON, March 22. A striking feature among the novelties at the Royal Horticultural Society's show at Viueent-square, Westminster, S.W., yesterday was the wealth of new daffodils and narcissi. Mr T. Lionel Richardson, of Waterford, won first-class certificates lor Glorious, a white narcissus with an orange-scarlet cup; and Beersheba, a white trumpet daffodil, the blooms of which were nearly .jin in Another of his novelties. Fairy Circle, is an exquisite little white narcissus with a pink rim to its eye. Sir George Holford received an award for a new Inmntophyllum, or Kaffii lily, called Westonbirt Brilliant—a gorgeous scarlet novelty—and the director of Kew Gardens (Mr A. W. Hill) for a new Callistemon, or bottle-brush tree, the flowers of which were of a vivid deep crimson.
