The HOll AV. J. Geihlis, AI.L.C., a very old and well-known figure in New Zealand journalism, died on Saturday night at the age of sixty-live states a Press Association message from Napier. Deceased was for many years niaul.igiiig director of the “New Zealand Times” and the “Napier Daily Telegraph,” and formerly part proprietor of the “New Zealand Observer.” Deceased was one of a party of New Zealand editors who mnde a tour of France during the war. He had been a member of the Legislative Council for about eight years, having been reappointed last year 011 the expiration of his previous term.

Tho (lontti took place on Saturday evening at Cliristehurcli, at lii.s residence, Bealev Avenue, of Mr Thomas O’Neill, formerly a well-known and respected resident of Rimu, wiliere lie resided for more than forty years, prior to liis removal a couple of years ago to Cliristehurcli. Deceased, who was 72 years of age, was a native of County Kerry Ireland, and came to the Constat the age of 19 years. He was a brother of Mr Patrick O’Neill, Borough Foreman, of Greymouth, and Mrs Sullivan, of Hokitika, is a sister. He is also survived by a widow (a member of the Spence family, late of Rimn) and a family of ten, eight sons and two daughters, nearly all of whom are grown up.
An accident occurred on the road at Dobson last evening about 7.30 o’clock, Mr John Run no, being hurt by a motor car, but not to the extent, apparently that he might have been in the circumstances. Mr H. Carter was motoring to Greymouth to attend the Power Hoard meeting and was crossing the small bridge near the Power House, when Mr Ruane was encountered. He loomed up suddenly in front of the car, which, fortunately .was travelling slowly at the time, but it was too late to avoid a collision. One of the front wheels ran over him whereupon the car. was brought to a standstill, and M.r Carter extricated the injured man from beneath the vehicle, and atonce conveyed him to the Grey River Hospital. Mr Ruane, who is 60 years of age, sustained an injury to his right leg, but the exact nature of it was not ascertained last night, when he was reported to be doing satisfactorily, except that the injury was a painful one. The injured memlier will be X-rayed this morning to ascertain if there is a fracture.

A collision between a motor lorry and a boy on a bicycle occurred in Alackay Street, Oreymouth, yesterday afternoon. The cyclist was proceeding in the direction of the railway station when the lorry emerged from Ashby Berg and C’o’s store, striking the bicycle broadside on. The rider was thrown to the ground but escaped serious injury. The bicycle was badly damaged, but the lorry was unharmed.
