The first census return from the papers tilled in on April 20lli last in Groymoutli, was made available by the Enumerator, Mr I). Mclntosh, who has had control of the work of tabulating tho returns at the Groymoutli Post Office. The figures are those dealing with the population of the Cobden Town District, which shows an increase of 77 persons during the past five years. The funeral of the late .1. W. Dick took place at Hoefton on Tuesday morning there being a large attendance of mourners and friends of deceased from, all parts of the West Coast. The remains were conveyed to Hoefton by the morning train and taken from the railway station to St Stephens Church where a short service was held and thence to the Suburban Cemetery. The members of the local Railway Staff acted as poll bearers. The Reeftun Jockey Club’s Committee attended in a body. Tho services at the Church and graveside were conducted by Rev. J. W. Hlovee.

Tin* wedding took place oil Monday Inst, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Clmroli Hokitika, of George Stanley -Muirliead (eldest son of Air and -Mrs Oeo. Maunder), and was attended by her sister, Alias Alay .Maunder and Aliss Elsie Aluirhead (sister of tbe bridegroom) as bridesmaids. Air Albert Hoy was best man. The Rev P. 11. Eraser was tbe officiating clergyman. A reception was afterwards held at Preston’s Ten Rooms. Air and Airs Aluirhead left later for Dunedin and Rluff on their honevmoon.

At St. Mary’s euchre tournament on Tuesday evening the attendance was large, and after keen competiton for the valuable prizes offered, the first (a Marcella quilt and a pair of sheets) was won by Mr 11. Ferguson, senr. ; the second prize (a dozen pillow eases) was won by Mrs T. Robinson; the third prize (half a dozen white face towels) by Mr T. Lock, and the fourth (half a dozen men’s handkerchief) by -Mr J. Sullivan. At next Tuesday's tourney four valuable prizes will bo offered.

It was recently stated that a schnapper, believed to be a record in size, was taken in a trawl in Auckland waters. The fish weighed lOJlb. On Sunday, however, a bigger sehnapper was caught by a resident of Seatoun, Wellington. The fisherman was spearing for butterfish at the Pinnacle roc-k, when ibe sehnapper swam within bis reach. He made a lunge at it, and speared it. and took it into bis boat. It weighed 21.j1b, measured 3ft Jin from snout to tail, and was '29Jin round in the widest part.
